Sober Sunday Brunchin'

A common theme for blogs or Instagram is the "hungover brunch" which is usually chic twenty year olds going out the next morning still looking quite fabulous claiming that the only hangover cure they know is mimosas and overpriced waffles.

Well I am here to show you the never before seen (at least by my eyes) Sober Sunday Brunch (SSB)!

Now, I don't drink so I cannot tell you if this method works or not. But my Sunday brunches are a little more down to earth. More diner style food and less rooftop views of the city.

Side note, I often look like I am hungover despite the fact that my Saturday night was spent Netflix and chilling (and I really just mean chilling and eating cereal in bed) rather than at the club. I am just not a morning person and the thought of being surrounded by people early on my 'day of rest' sounds god awful. But I am a millennial and it is my duty to brunch. So brunch it is!

I'm lucky that I live in a city with pretty good gluten free options. And when I say 'gluten free options' I do NOT mean salads. I am tired of going to restaurants who claim to have a great gluten free menu which actually consists of: salads (w/ only the healthy dressings), steak, vegetables, and potatoes. While technically those items are all gluten free, they are naturally gluten free. So I could feasibly get all of those items at a restaurant that claims not to have a gluten free menu. Stop trying to play it off like you are accommodating, because you're not.

I am not gluten free to be healthy because 1) that's complete bullshit and 2) I am too much of a masochist to care about my health that much. I have an allergy that causes me to well, you know what? this blog is still new, I'll let you use your imagination to picture what happens if I have gluten.

If you claim to have a gluten free menu, I better see some damn gluten free bread and pancakes on that menu or else you are just a big fat sleazy liar.

Okay, I digress. So some friends and I headed to "The Growling Rabbit" in Rogers Park which is a cute, and underrated in my opinion, diner offering everything from sandwiches to pastries (none of which are gluten free I may add).

I was instantly drawn to the carnitas breakfast sandwich with Pico de Gallo, guac, a fried egg, and my tears of joy as a nice finishing touch. We also can't forget the bomb country potatoes that come on the side.

You may be asking yourself, "Why is the Vice President of Hillel ordering a carnitas sandwich?" Well, I'm glad you asked! In my opinion, and I'm no Rabbi, the dude upstairs would want me to be happy. And have you ever had a carnitas sandwich or a shrimp cocktail? Well that is happiness and I figure as long as I'm not killing anyone, I should be good in the end.

For an extra two bucks they put it on gluten free bread that didn't actually taste like cardboard (#winning)!

To my hangry best friend's dissapointment, I made everyone push their beautiful food together for a picture (do it for the blog). I can't remember exactly what everyone else ordered but we all left very full and in a slight food coma.

look at that beauty

Look at that beauty: slabs of pork and guac perfectly finished with a fried egg blanket. If you don't like this, I don't like you.

Bonus, the place was decorated with eclectic pictures of bunnies. May favorite was the vampire bunny that creepily watched me pee.

After we finished, we headed to the beach conveniently located down the street from the breakfast joint. We have all lived here for almost three years now and had no idea that this beautiful beach was located right in our backyard.

This is why should should brunch, folks. You never know what you will find!

Taken right before I set down my leftovers and forgot about them in the grass. Thankfully, it was still there when I went back to grab it about 20 min later. I'm not sure if anyone tampered with it, but I am currently eating the rest for dinner so we will know the cause of my death if I don't wake up tomorrow. I also thought that "beach grass" which is actually called Ammophila breviligulata (Google coming in clutch once again) was native to east coast beaches. Growing up in California, I'm on used to just sand and water. So I was actually pretty pumped to frolic through the grassy area.

I've decided that this blog will show the real me. The one who doesn't think about how hot the sand will be on my feet when I take my shoes off.

Everyone knows that the beach is the perfect place for a photo shoot. So once again, my awesome friends acted as my amateur photographers.

Side note- I've noticed that all the major bloggers have husbands or boyfriends who always take pictures for them. Maybe I should add that I'm looking for a photographer boyfriend in my Tinder profile? Thoughts? I mean it's really a win win situation. He gets to date me and I get free blog pics.

Applicants inquire within (insert dirty joke).

Pretending I'm a classy young lady who wouldn't dare to make a sexual innuendo, especially on her blog!

Brunch uniform: chambray collared tank with tribal inspired necklace, rose gold watch and my vintage Ray Bans. Simple, yet effective. My simple black crossbody bag allows for ample frolicking and posing in the sand.

This seemed like a place a blogger would take a pic, I don't know, I'm still learning.

Fresh pedicure possibly being ruined by the sand. oh well.

A big thank you to lovely photographers/ great friends and the man who kindly noticed our struggle and got up from his beach chair to offer to take a picture of us.

I'm hoping that someday soon I can do a post about a bougie brunch place to have a comparison on the food, aesthetic, amount of bitchy girls seated around us, etc. But that will have to wait until I'm with my parents because I sure as hell can't afford those kind of places on my own.

So thanks to all five of you who cared enough to read about my somewhat exciting Sunday morning. I can guarantee you that posts will not always come this often. But it's summer so I have much more time on my hands. Go out and enjoy this great weather we're having and stop reading random blogs!

XOXO,
